NYC350 Advisory Board Charter Day Proclamation Special Report

Dear Friends-

The Society of Daughters of Holland Dames is planning an evening tour and reception to St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery for the date of Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 6:00-8:00 pm. Save the date and plan to join us! Complete details will soon follow in a formal invitation! Please also plan to get the word out electronically to your memberships!

As you may know, the Church was built on the site of Peter Stuyvesant's Chapel, and is the final resting place of Peter Stuyvesant. The Sanctuary, Vestibule, Yard and surrounding area is replete with many beautiful windows, stones, sculptures, plaques donated by many historical and patriotic societies and civic leaders. Notable examples include:

Daughters of Holland Dames in 1903 dedicated a magnificent stained glass window to the memory of Governor General Petrus Stuytvesant that soars above Stuyvesant's resting spot;

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands dedicated in 1915 a wonderful bronze bust of Peter Stuyvesant by Dutch sculptor Toon DuPuis that stands in the nearby yard;

St. Nicholas Society in 1941 dedicated a bronze bust of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant that stands in the entryway;

Sons of the Revolution in 1904 dedicated a stained glass window depicting The Apostle Paul that stands across the sanctuary;

Holland Society placed a BronzeTablet to commemorate the nearby site of Peter Stuyvesant's Pear Tree Orchard ;

Cooper Union dedicated a replica Bouwerie garden nearby; This remarkable site resonates with so much of our history...let's join together to celebrate!
