Walking Tour: Dutch Nieuw Amsterdam

Step back in time and experience life in Manhattan exactly 350 years ago as Russell Shorto, author of Island at the Center of the World, leads a walking tour through Lower Manhattan.


Meet at Museum Lobby Entrance, Schermerhorn Row 12 Fulton Street (btw. South and Front Sts. in Manhattan) Sites on the tour include the locations of the fort (Old Customs House), Dutch taverns, the Stadt Huys (Town Hall), the original defense wall, and more. Reservations suggested.

Dramatic Performance: Beyond the Golden Door

Celebrate the 350th Anniversary of the Jews in America with Judith Goldsmith as she performs in a solo dramatic presentation, "Beyond the Golden Door." This remarkable production recreates the immigrant experience at the turn-of-the century and features a vivid portrait of Emma Lazarus, whose famous poem expresses the essence of the symbolic power of the Statue of Liberty.

Walking Tour: African American Life in Lower Manhattan
Sunday, March 21, 2004 2-4 p.m.

This tour connects the African Burial Ground to other historic sites including stations on the Underground Railroad, the former location of New York's slave market, the African Free School, and the Colored Sailor's Home. Reservations strongly suggested. $10 tour fee does not include museum admission. Tour is also offered at the same time on March 28, April 4, and April 11. Special dates for group tour bookings are also available.

Book Talk: Russell Shorto presents The Island at the Center of the World
Thursday, March 18, 2004 7-9 pm

Russell Shorto explores the history of Nieuw Amsterdam in a book that will revolutionize our understanding of Dutch Manhattan. Join us as Shorto explores the history of Manhattan and the role of Dutch society in shaping America. Historian Charles Gehring will be on hand to discuss his work as a translator and researcher of Dutch history over the past thirty years. Selected artifacts from the museum's archeological collection will be shown as a preview of our forthcoming exhibit on Dutch history in New York. Please join us for this special event as we celebrate publication of Russell Shorto's astonishing and fascinating new book, The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan, The Forgotten Colony that Shaped America.

Kicking Off the 350th Anniversary of Wall Street Opening Bell Ceremony
 

February 2, 2003-The Committee held its first event celebrating the 350th Anniversary of New York City. The event took place at Alexander Hamilton, U.S. Custom House, NYC. Honored Council Speaker Gifford Miller. The event included opening ceremonies, a champagne reception and of course a Birthday Cake.
